For most political science majors, they discover after school that they have no desire to be politicians and then are at a loss for what else to do with their lives. One of those is working as a lobbyist in Washington. Lobbying is a very important part of law making as they often represent interest groups. Many nonprofits engage the services of lobbyists to make sure that their interests are represented on Capitol Hill. Political science majors are in a unique advantage to offer this service because they understand the relationship between the different arms of government and between the government and the people.
When it comes to political science careers, there is a high demand for graduates in the public relations field, particularly during campaign season. Because of the extensive research and surveys carried out by political science majors, by the time they graduate they make great public relations analysts and advisers to politicians who are campaigning for public office.
However there are those who really do not want anything to do with politics yet still want to make good use of their political science careers; if you fall into this category there are some excellent options for you.
In practically any field of endeavor, there is a need for graduates of political science. This is because those graduates have a wide variety of skills including how to interpret public policy, how to carry out vast and accurate surveys, great writing and research skills as well as a talent for relating with people. These skills are those that are highly valued especially in managerial and administrative positions.
Some political science careers which you might want to consider include working as a CIA Analyst or Agent, a Communications Director, a corporate adviser for governmental affairs, a corporate economist, and immigration officer, foundation president or international research specialist. There are so many options open to those with political science majors. Some decide to teach also although there seem to be more opportunities for those with graduate degrees.
On the paycheck that someone with a Bachelor’s degree in political science can expect to earn, The College Majors Handbook says that it is an average of $2,500 more than most people with a bachelor’s degree earn annually. For those working in an administrative or managerial capacity, the annual income is even higher.
Right now, political science is one of the most rated undergraduate degrees as many more are beginning to realize the vast job opportunities for graduates.
