In the past decade careers in environmental science have been gaining prominence because there has been a rising awareness of the environmental impact caused by various human activities. Although there is a great deal that is known, there is still a lot more to be uncovered. As a result, the demand for environmental scientists has increased making careers in environmental science in high demand. More undergraduates are registering for certificates and degrees in environmental science. Despite the increasing awareness, some still need to know what opportunities are out there for a graduate in environmental science.

Careers in Environmental Science – Opportunities

There are so many careers in environmental science that it would take a lot to exhaust them all. It was reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics that there would be a 25 percent increase in careers in environmental science in the next few years. Below are some areas where a degree in this field would come in handy:

Environmental Health Specialist: This is a one of the careers in environmental science that has experienced a lot of interest lately. Generally, this person is referred to as a Health Inspector. The duties of such a person would involve issues of public health, industrial, residential surroundings, and commercial health concerns. The opportunities are endless because most municipalities have an environmental health department. Most companies and industrial outfits constantly engage the services of an environmental health specialist.

Conservation Scientists: Most governments both Federal and State are concerned about the conservation of their natural resources. These include wildlife, fish, water and forests amongst others. The expertise of conservations scientists are necessary and usually sought after.

Ecologist: An ecologist is one who studies the environment and its relationship to living organisms. This includes the way the flora and fauna perform in and out of their natural habitats and how they are affected by natural occurrences such as rainfall and change in temperature and also how man-made changes affect them. Those who study ecology can have a career in environmental science, working for large pharmaceuticals and other companies that need an understanding of the environment in order to develop their products.

Hydrologist: As the world has witnessed a rise in the number of hurricanes and tsunamis, the need for hydrologists has increased. They study the water cycle and the way the rise in ocean levels affects other aspects of society. Most construction companies make use of hydrologists as consultants. A hydrologist can also get a career in the government water agency or consulting for nonprofits.

Research Scientists: Environmental research scientists have a lot of job opportunities open to them. These include working in the public health department of a government or in the private sector. In the public sector, they are needed to carry out research on environmental health and from that research, analyze, interpret and report the data on a variety of areas including hazardous waste and drinking water quality. In the private sector, they work as consultants in several sectors including real estate, pharmaceuticals and food and beverage companies.
